Is Aluminum Foil a Good Conductor?

aluminum foil insulation
Aluminium foil is constructed of aluminium in thin metal blades less than 0.2mm wide; smaller gauges down to 6 microns are also widely used. In the US, foil is usually measured in thousandths of an inch or mile. Regular household foils are usually 0.016mm wide, usually 0.024mm medium-sized household foils. Foil is collapsible and can be quickly twisted or placed around items. Thin foils are brittle and are often laminated to make them thicker and better for other materials like plastic or parchment. In the mid-20th century, aluminum foil replaced tin foil.

In 2003 Europe produced about 800,000 tons of aluminum foil per year, and the United States produced 600,000 tons per year. About 75% of aluminum foil is used in poultry, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and 25% is used in industrial uses (such as thermal insulation, cables, and electronics).

For radiation channels (boundary and reflectivity), power exchangers (power conduction), and wire linings (obstruction and conductivity), aluminum foils are often used. Due to its amazing malleability, aluminium is used for bundling: it can be quickly turned into a thin sheet of aluminium and folded, rolled, or bundled. Aluminium foil completely blocks light and oxygen, odors and tastes, and moisture, which breeds bacteria, so it is often used for bundling of nutritional and pharmaceutical products, including extensive bundling (aseptic bundling) of beverages and dairy products, without the need for refrigerated storage. Aluminum foil insulation

To be precise, aluminum is a very weak insulator. It performs well on fire. Even so, it does represent radiant heat, for which it is used to make emergency blankets ("space blankets") for walking. Metals do have to be in contact with a hot object to conduct electricity. If they are not, their reflective effect on fire (radiation) dominates.

Space covers are usually made of plastic (a strong insulator) with a metal coating. The fact that foil is a poor insulator also makes no sense, since plastic can insulate you.

The main function of a foil emergency blanket is to trap dust, a strong insulator, and avoid (sweat) evaporation. If the blanket is transparent, it usually reflects radiant heat from your body back to you. This usually stands for solar power, but if you're using an emergency mountaineering jacket, you're more likely to worry about staying warm at night than during the day.

Even throughout the day, if the sun is so low that you need an aluminum foil emergency blanket, I think it's more useful to buy one that reflects your body's heat back to you than a black one that absorbs sunlight, especially since the blanket is to avoid heat conduction and is made more of plastic so even a black blanket won't absorb any heat. When radiant heat reaches the air, it can't be safely brought back through the insignificant remains of the blanket anyway.

A blanket made of something like wool but waterproof would probably be much better, but definitely harder to wear in an emergency.

The same idea applies to vacuum bottles. Substrates that have been partially separated from the air (vacuum) or other materials provide shielding to avoid thermal conduction. The metal surface emits radiant heat and is contained in the flask.

The above briefly describes whether aluminum foil is a good conductor. If you want to know more or want to buy custom aluminum foil, please contact us.

Learn more from our FAQ
Which to choose Aluminum foil coated PE or Metalized pet film coated PE ?

It depends on what product to be made in final procedure. Aluminum foil coated pe is with at least 97% reflectivity, it can be bonded to EPE foam but also most of time for laminated with bubble. Metalized pet film coated PE with lower reflectivity ,but it is with strong surface.

I am a insulated liner/bag manufacturer, what product do you suggest?

There maybe bubble lamination machines and heating pressure lamination machines in your factory, we suggest Aluminum foil 7mic+PE20mic, and Metalized PET film12mic+PE15mic.

If i would like to get a quote ,what information shall i need to know first?

You are request to telling application, material structure, thickness and roll width and quantity.

What is the MOQ and how is packaging?

MOQ is 1000kgs for each product, packaging depends on roll size, common width is 1200mm and 1500mm, length are 4000m to 5000m per roll. Rolls can be vertically packed on pallet also accept to do horizontal suspending packaging.

Is this product by wet lamination or by dry lamination?

Both wet lamination line(extrusion coating) and dry lamination line(glue coating) are equiped in our Pengyuan group.
